Experts link youth social media violence to adult behavior

Child and adolescent psychiatrist Linas Slušnys and NGO leader Rugilė Butkevičiūtė are addressing the rise of violence and aggressive behavior among youth on social media, placing significant emphasis on adult responsibility.

Slušnys argues that the culture within social networks is a reflection of the behavior modeled by adults. He suggests that instead of focusing solely on bans, society must teach children how to navigate digital spaces with the same guidance provided for physical safety and real-world social interaction. He notes that bans often arise because adults have failed to manage the spread and harm caused by negative online behaviors.

Butkevičiūtė, head of the NGO Ribologija, attributes outbursts of aggression and bullying to excessive control and high expectations placed on children. She suggests that a lack of space for adolescent rebellion and the pressure to constantly participate in structured activities contribute to these issues.

This discussion follows recent legislative amendments in Lithuania regarding mobile phone use in schools. Under new regulations, educational institutions have until September 1, 2026, to establish their own rules for mobile phone usage, though some schools have already begun implementing restrictions.
