Explosive attack on Pan-American Highway kills soldier in Colombia

An explosive attack on the Pan-American Highway near the Puerto Remolino sector, between Popayán and Pasto, has resulted in the death of one soldier and left several others injured. The incident occurred at approximately kilometer 49 of the strategic corridor in southwestern Colombia.

The Colombian Ministry of Defense identified the victim as professional soldier José Manuel López Villada. According to military reports, the attack involved explosive devices, possibly cylinder-type bombs, planted along the road. The Ministry attributed the action to the Franco Benavides structure of the FARC dissidents, noting that the group had prepared the area with multiple devices.

Following the detonation, the Pan-American Highway was closed to vehicular traffic, particularly in the direction from Pasto to Popayán, to allow specialized Army units to conduct security inspections and search for additional explosives. Authorities are investigating the incident to identify those responsible and ensure the safety of the route, which serves as a vital connection between the Nariño region and central Colombia.
