Explosive attacks on Colombia's Pan-American Highway

Overview

Violence involving explosive devices has targeted the Pan-American Highway in southwestern Colombia. On September 7, an attack near the Puerto Remolino sector killed one soldier, identified by the Ministry of Defense as José Manuel López Villada, and injured several others. Military reports attributed the use of explosive devices, possibly cylinder-type bombs, to the Franco Benavides structure of FARC dissidents.

Following this, on September 11, the Colombian National Army’s Third Division neutralized five improvised explosive devices (IEDs) in the Patía municipality of Cauca. These devices were discovered inside a van in the El Estrecho sector after presumed members of the Carlos Patiño organized armed group (GAO-r) launched explosives at a military battalion facility. While highway traffic has since returned to normal, the military has pledged to intensify operations in the Cauca department to secure the transit corridor.
