Expo Prado 2026 showcases livestock excellence in Uruguay

The Expo Prado 2026 livestock exhibition in Uruguay showcased significant advancements and competitive results across several major cattle breeds.

In the Angus category, the cabaña El Puesto secured the Grand Champion Male title with an offspring of Napoleón, noted for its structure, volume, and functionality. The Braford competition saw Sauce Chico achieve a notable debut by winning Grand Champion Male, while La Perdiz took the Grand Champion Female title. Judges noted the high quality and regional genetic similarities between Uruguayan, Argentine, Brazilian, and Paraguayan Braford systems.

In the Charolais sector, the awards were split between La Margarita and La Espiga. La Margarita was named Grand Champion Female, while La Espiga earned the Grand Champion Male title. Breeders emphasized a shift toward producing more modern, functional animals adapted for meat production and crossbreeding rather than focusing solely on size.

Additionally, the event highlighted the growth of the Suffolk sheep breed, with Minister of Livestock, Agriculture, and Fisheries Alfredo Fratti noting the expansion of the breed from a niche market to one involving dozens of participating breeders.
