Brazilian seed market worth R$ 47 billion discussed at national congress

The 23rd Brazilian Seed Congress has commenced in Foz do Iguaçu, Paraná, focusing on a national certified seed market estimated at R$ 47.3 billion. The event addresses critical industry challenges including rising production costs, biotechnology, genetics, and the fight against illegal seed trade.

According to estimates from the Brazilian Association of Seeds and Seedlings (Abrasem) for the 2024/25 harvest, soybean seeds account for R$ 27.6 billion, or approximately 58% of the market. Corn follows with R$ 14.5 billion. Other significant sectors include cotton, wheat, sorghum, beans, and rice.

The industry faces substantial losses due to the use of non-certified and clandestine materials, estimated at R$ 14.6 billion in potential revenue. Specifically, approximately 29% of soybean seeds, 35% of cotton, and 38% of rice used in cultivation are not certified.
