Spain faces wave of thefts targeting historical gold and religious jewels

Spain is experiencing a wave of targeted thefts involving historical gold and religious artifacts. In Villena, a coordinated group of masked individuals stole much of the Bronze Age Villena Treasure from the municipal museum in a four-minute operation. While most of the gold was taken, a rare meteoritic iron bracelet was left behind. Authorities fear the thieves intend to melt down the precious metals, which would cause irreversible loss to historical research.

Simultaneously, a series of thefts has targeted religious heritage in the Extremadura region. In towns such as Barcarrota, Jerez de los Caballeros, and Valle de Santa Ana, thieves have stolen crowns, necklaces, and other jewels from various Marian images. These thefts have caused significant emotional distress to local communities.

Europol has noted an increase in such crimes, identifying museums as high-priority targets for itinerant criminal gangs across Europe. Experts emphasize that protecting heritage requires not only advanced security systems but also rigorous documentation and control during the transport and restoration of sensitive works.
