Extremadura launches mobile kidney disease screening in rural areas

The RADAR project has launched a mobile unit to provide free screening for chronic kidney disease (CKD) across 14 rural municipalities in Extremadura, Spain. The initiative is led by the Servicio Extremeño de Salud (SES) and FundeSalud, with support from Boehringer Ingelheim and collaboration from local pharmaceutical and renal associations.

CKD is a progressive condition where the kidneys gradually lose their ability to filter blood. Because the disease often presents no symptoms in its early stages, it is estimated that two out of three people in Spain living with the condition are unaware of it. The mobile unit aims to bridge the gap in healthcare access for rural populations, allowing for early detection and intervention before serious complications arise.

The bus will visit locations including Valverde de la Vera, Talaveruela de la Vera, Rosalejo, Belvís de Monroy, and Navalmoral de la Mata, among others, to offer testing and health guidance.
