CKD screening initiative in Extremadura

Overview

The RADAR project has introduced a mobile health unit to provide free chronic kidney disease (CKD) screening across rural areas in Extremadura, Spain. Led by the Servicio Extremeño de Salud (SES) and FundeSalud, the initiative aims to improve healthcare equity and early detection in municipalities such as Navalmoral de la Mata, Valverde de la Vera, and Talaveruela de la Vera.

To assist in patient monitoring, the project utilizes an artificial intelligence-based voice assistant named ‘LOLA’. This virtual assistant performs automated periodic calls to track the evolution of diagnosed patients and detect early signs of worsening conditions. The program seeks to address the issue that many individuals living with CKD remain unaware of their condition due to a lack of early symptoms.
