Spain implements wildfire recovery and prevention measures

Various regions in Spain are managing the aftermath and prevention of recent major forest fires. In the Valencian Community, authorities are implementing reforestation plans and emergency aid following fires that destroyed nearly 10,000 hectares, including significant damage to the Serra d’Espadà. Cork producers in the area report that the impact on cork oak trees could delay harvests for up to 45 years.

In Castilla y León, the regional government is requesting specific support from the central government for restoration in the Tiétar and Alberche valleys. Meanwhile, in the Bierzo region, local platforms have questioned whether the 500,000 euros allocated for hydrological-forestry works is sufficient to recover 1,300 hectares of burned land.

Prevention strategies are also being highlighted. The Proyecto Mosaico, developed by the University of Extremadura, is being reactivated in Sierra de Gata and Las Hurdes to use agricultural and livestock activities as tools to reduce fuel loads. Additionally, in Galicia, the use of virtual grazing technology with native livestock is being employed to manage vegetation and create natural firebreaks.
