Rashad al-Alimi, Chairman of Yemen’s Presidential Leadership Council, has ordered the immediate closure of all ports and border crossings operating outside the legal framework. Presiding over a meeting of the Supreme Committee for Combating Smuggling in Riyadh, al-Alimi stated that the “era of leniency toward smuggling is over.” The initiative aims to protect legitimate trade, secure sovereign ports, and disrupt the “war economy” used to fund and arm the Houthi group.

Al-Alimi directed a comprehensive review of all ports and crossings, including an assessment of the performance of managers and security agencies. He emphasized that there will be no administrative or political immunity for officials found to be complicit in smuggling or facilitating the movement of illicit goods. Furthermore, he called for the creation of a unified list of prohibited materials and dual-use items to prevent their transfer to Houthi-controlled areas.

Separately, reports from the International Committee of the Red Cross and the Yemeni Red Crescent indicate that heavy seasonal rains and flash floods across Yemen have caused significant casualties and displacement. Between July and mid-August 2026, the extreme weather resulted in 73 deaths and 37 injuries, with over 7,600 families affected by the destruction of homes, crops, and infrastructure.
