Extreme heat in Europe causes 35,000 deaths and massive economic loss

Extreme heat across Western Europe this summer has resulted in at least 35,000 excess deaths and an estimated €180 billion in lost GDP. The World Health Organization has warned that these deadly conditions may serve as a “dress rehearsal” for even more severe future heatwaves driven by climate change and El Niño.

In the European Parliament, leaders are calling for a shift from reactive disaster management to proactive mitigation and adaptation. Proposals include phasing out fossil fuels, investing in regional vulnerability reduction, and increasing industrial capacity for emergency equipment, such as Canadair aircraft.

United Nations reports indicate that the global community is nearing a breach of the Paris agreement's target of limiting warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius above preindustrial levels. Experts warn that even slightly lower temperature thresholds are becoming unsafe, as heat-trapping pollution continues to accumulate in the atmosphere.
