Extreme temperatures linked to increased heart failure and diverse health risks

Recent studies highlight the diverse and severe health risks associated with extreme temperature fluctuations. Research published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, based on an analysis of 482,000 hospitalizations in Sweden between 2006 and 2021, found that exposure to both extreme cold and extreme heat is linked to an increased risk of hospitalization for heart failure.

Cold exposure was associated with higher hospitalization risks appearing two to six days after the temperature drop, while the effects of high temperatures tended to manifest more rapidly, within the same day to three days after exposure.

Additionally, research published in Science Advances indicates that heatwaves cause health complications far beyond heatstroke or dehydration. An analysis of nearly one million acute care consultations in Chicago revealed that high temperatures significantly increase the frequency of over 30 health issues. These include skin rashes, acute kidney failure, mental health disorders, and even a dramatic increase in accidental injuries and gunshot wounds during periods exceeding 33.3°C.
