Extreme heat threatens July 4 celebrations in metro Atlanta

A dangerous heat wave is expected across metro Atlanta for the Fourth of July weekend, prompting health officials to issue red‑flag warnings for outdoor events. Organisers of the Peachtree Road Race have begun the event under red‑flag conditions, urging runners to slow their pace, use water stations frequently and monitor their wellbeing. The advisory extends to all outdoor activities, including fireworks displays and Braves games.

Officials recommend staying hydrated before heading outdoors, wearing sunscreen, limiting alcohol, taking regular breaks in shade or air‑conditioned spaces, and checking on vulnerable groups such as children, older adults and outdoor workers. DeKalb County has opened four cooling centers where residents can obtain water and relief from the heat. Early symptoms of heat exhaustion—including heavy sweating, dizziness, nausea and confusion—can quickly progress to life‑threatening heat stroke if untreated.
