Southeast US heat and storms Aug-Sept 2026
Overview
Late July and August 2026 saw continued volatility in the Southeast. On July 28, a mesoscale convective system moved across North Georgia, producing straight-line winds up to 75 mph in Catawba County, NC, and causing widespread tree damage across several Georgia counties. The National Weather Service confirmed an EF-0 tornado in Pickens County with maximum winds of 80-85 mph, causing sporadic damage in Jasper and leaving over 5,000 residents without power. In early August, the National Weather Service issued a hazardous weather outlook for north and central Georgia, warning of scattered thunderstorms and flash flooding through August 7. The Weather Prediction Center placed coastal South Carolina under a Marginal Risk for excessive rainfall, with localized flooding possible in Charleston and surrounding low-lying areas. Similar threats of rain and wind extended into Florida and the broader Southeast. By mid-August, extreme heat returned to the region. A heat advisory in effect through August 17 warned of heat index values reaching as high as 109 degrees, with high humidity providing little overnight relief. Concurrently, the Storm Prediction Center placed North Georgia under a marginal risk for severe storms, forecasting threats of damaging winds, torrential rain, and frequent lightning fueled by a hot, moist airmass. By August 17, a dangerous heat wave expanded across much of the Southern and Southeastern United States, with heat indices expected to reach as high as 115 degrees in some areas. In West Tennessee, an extreme heat warning was issued through Sunday, forecasting heat indices at or above 107 degrees in Memphis, where urban areas may see little nighttime relief. Simultaneously, unsettled weather including heavy rain, flash flooding, and severe thunderstorms impacted the Midwest, Ohio Valley, and Mid-Atlantic, particularly in the central Appalachians and parts of eastern Tennessee and western North Carolina.
