Extreme heat threatens Veracruz and Mérida in Mexico

Meteorologists warned that Veracruz‑Boca del Río is experiencing intense heat with actual temperatures reaching 34 °C and a heat index that will exceed 40 °C on Tuesday, posing risks to the elderly, children and outdoor workers. A stationary, out‑of‑season cold front over northern Tamaulipas is not expected to lower temperatures in the coastal area, though light rain may affect northern parts of the state.

In Mérida, the University of Yucatán’s FIUady weather station recorded a heat index of up to 50 °C on June 14 and continued extreme conditions in mid‑June, with temperatures peaking at 37 °C, humidity around 69 %, and UV radiation levels reaching the highest risk category. Residents face prolonged “infernal” heat through the afternoon, and several days of moderate rainfall have been recorded throughout the month.

Both regions are advised to take protective measures against heat‑related illnesses and high UV exposure.
