France faces historic drought and high wildfire risks

France is experiencing a historic drought that has surpassed the levels recorded in 1976. As of September 20, 2026, 84% of the country is affected by a decadal drought. The meteorological situation is characterized by a powerful anticyclonic blockage that is repelling Atlantic disturbances away from Western Europe, preventing significant rainfall. Between September 1 and September 20, only 8.2 mm of rain fell across the territory.

The summer of 2026 was already noted as the second least rainy summer on record, with a 40% precipitation deficit. This prolonged dryness, combined with unseasonably high temperatures that remain well above seasonal norms, has led to extreme soil desiccation and increased vulnerability in vegetation. Consequently, tens of thousands of citizens are currently without running water in certain areas.

Authorities have issued warnings regarding a very high risk of forest and vegetation fires, particularly in southern regions like the Aude, Gard, and Pyrénées-Orientales. The combination of dry fuel, high temperatures, and wind conditions continues to pose a significant threat to the environment and public safety.
