European school heatwave adaptation
Overview
Rising temperatures across Europe are creating significant challenges for educational institutions. Approximately 16,600 schools in the region currently experience at least one day per year with temperatures exceeding 30°C, a figure projected to double to 34,200 by 2050. Heatwaves have already disrupted the education of over 900,000 students, leading to school closures and shortened class times. Experts emphasize that effective adaptation should focus on limiting heat gain through insulation, windows, and ventilation rather than relying solely on technologies like air conditioning or heat pumps.
In September 2026, a significant heatwave in France coincided with the start of the new academic year. Following a summer classified by Minister for Ecological Transition Monique Barbut as “the hottest summer recorded in France since 1900,” temperatures in southern cities were expected to reach between 36°C and 37°C. Météo-France reported that the summer of 2026 saw average 24-hour temperatures reach 24°C, which was 3.6°C above seasonal norms. The 40°C threshold was crossed 178 times during this period.
By early September, orange heatwave alerts were issued for several southern departments, including Ardèche, Aude, Drôme, Gard, Hérault, and Vaucluse. Recorded highs reached 39.4°C in Perpignan, 39.2°C in Albi, and 38°C in Nîmes.
A dramatic weather transition is now underway as a low-pressure system moves in. This shift is expected to cause temperatures to plummet by 10 to 15°C within 48 hours starting mid-week. The transition will bring rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds, with gusts potentially reaching 90 km/h in parts of Brittany and the Pays de la Loire. Similar cooling and rain are affecting northern Spain, marking a sharp seasonal transition across much of the Iberian Peninsula and France.
