Extreme weather impacts Colombia and Mexico

Colombia is facing significant agricultural and economic threats due to the onset of El Niño, which the World Meteorological Organization predicts will reach peak intensity by the end of the year and persist until February 2027. Between June and August 2026, FEDEGÁN reported 15,125 cattle deaths, the displacement of 392,614 animals, and over 2.8 million hectares of affected land, with losses totaling approximately $75 billion. Proposals have been made to the Ministry of Agriculture to establish a National Supply Table to coordinate livestock feed using byproducts from the sugar, palm, rice, and cotton sectors.

Simultaneously, Mexico is experiencing extreme weather volatility. The National Meteorological Service has forecasted intense rainfall, with levels between 75 and 150 mm expected in Veracruz, Oaxaca, Chiapas, and Tabasco. While Hurricane Marie is moving southwest of Baja California Sur, its circulation continues to influence the Baja California peninsula, bringing strong winds and high waves. The region is managing a complex mix of meteorological systems, including the Mexican monsoon and tropical wave number 36.
