ExxonMobil Guyana calls for private sector role in gas development
Alistair Routledge, President of ExxonMobil Guyana Limited (EMGL), has called on local private sector entities to help establish the necessary foundation for gas development in Guyana. Speaking at the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s 2026 Energy Luncheon, Routledge emphasized that creating an enabling environment for investment is critical to matching offshore production with onshore demand.
EMGL has already completed a US$1 billion pipeline to transport natural gas from the Liza field to the Gas-to-Energy project site at Wales, West Bank Demerara. This infrastructure is expected to begin delivering gas later this year to support power generation and Natural Gas Liquids facilities.
However, a proposed second gas development project in Region Six would require a significantly larger pipeline, estimated to cost approximately US$2 billion. Routledge noted that substantial gas demand from sectors such as data centers, aluminum melting, or increased power generation is required to justify such large-scale foundational investments in pipeline and associated infrastructure.
