Eye health initiatives and screenings held in Italy for World Sight Day

In observance of World Sight Day, health initiatives in Italy have focused on eye disease prevention and screening. The IAPB Italia ETS promoted the event through consultations and free eye exams in 90 cities. According to the World Health Organization, over 2.2 billion people globally live with vision impairment or blindness, at least half of which could be prevented or treated through early diagnosis.

In Italy, an aging population has led to an increase in chronic degenerative eye conditions, such as glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy, affecting over 3 million people. Medical experts warn that sudden symptoms, such as new moving spots, light flashes, or shadows in the field of vision, may indicate serious issues like retinal detachment and require immediate evaluation.

Local efforts in Palermo, organized by the ASP di Palermo at the PTA Enrico Albanese, conducted 289 screenings. The initiative identified refractive errors and anomalies in both adults and children. Notably, five children diagnosed with amblyopia were referred for free prescription glasses under current regulations.
