Eye health screening initiatives in Italy
Overview
In observance of World Sight Day, eye health initiatives and screenings have expanded across Italy. The IAPB Italia ETS promoted the event through consultations and free exams in 90 cities. Local efforts included 289 screenings in Palermo organized by the ASP di Palermo at the PTA Enrico Albanese, which identified refractive errors and anomalies in adults and children; notably, five children diagnosed with amblyopia were referred for free prescription glasses.
Regional activities included OCT scans for citizens over 50 in Liguria, pediatric screenings for amblyopia in Petrosino, Brescia, and Cassano delle Murge, and vision checks for children in Salerno. In Modena, optical centers conducted month-long screenings focused on digital eye strain.
Health experts and patient associations continue to raise concerns regarding the sustainability of eye care within the national health system. Francesco Bandello, president of Apmo, warned of a potential ‘dentistry-style’ privatization, noting that long wait times for procedures like cataract surgery could disproportionately affect economically vulnerable populations.
Medical professionals also highlighted the rising prevalence of chronic degenerative conditions, such as glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy, which affect over 3 million people in Italy. Experts noted that over one million people live with maculopathy, a figure expected to rise due to an aging population and increasing myopia. Furthermore, doctors warned that sudden symptoms like light flashes, shadows, or moving spots may indicate serious issues such as retinal detachment and require immediate evaluation.
