Ezra Caudell shows signs of progress after Philadelphia Cycling Classic crash

American cyclist Ezra Caudell is showing encouraging signs of progress after suffering multi-system trauma during the Philadelphia Cycling Classic on August 30. Caudell, a 19-year-old rider for Modern Adventure Pro Cycling, was hospitalized in critical condition following a collision that resulted in him hitting a lamppost.

According to his team, Caudell has been successfully weaned from deep sedation and taken off a ventilator at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. This milestone has allowed medical professionals to better assess his neurologic status. While he remains in the ICU and continues to receive support via ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) to assist his lung recovery, he has regained consciousness and is communicating with his family and teammates through short videos.

Caudell’s injuries include a concussion and severe chest trauma. The crash occurred during the first edition of the Philadelphia Cycling Classic held since 2016. Another rider involved in the collision, Milan Menten, was treated for minor whiplash and released the same day.
