Ezra Caudell cycling accident recovery

On August 30, 19-year-old American cyclist Ezra Caudell, a rider for Modern Adventure Pro Cycling, sustained life-threatening injuries during the Philadelphia Cycling Classic. The crash occurred as Caudell and Belgian rider Milan Menten attempted to bridge to a breakaway; Menten reported that Caudell lost balance after checking the peloton, causing his wheel to strike a curb or drain and sending him into a lamppost.

Initially, Caudell was placed in intensive care at Jefferson Einstein Philadelphia Hospital with major trauma to his head and lungs. Following the incident, his condition was described as critical, requiring a ventilator and deep sedation.

By September 11, Caudell showed signs of progress. His team reported that he had been successfully weaned from deep sedation and taken off a ventilator at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. While he remains in the ICU receiving support via ECMO to assist with lung recovery, he has regained consciousness and is communicating with family and teammates. His injuries include a concussion and severe chest trauma.
