F-Droid releases version 2.0 with major Android redesign

F-Droid has released version 2.0, marking its most significant update in a decade. The open-source Android app repository has undergone a major technical overhaul, rebuilding core components using Kotlin and Jetpack Compose to align with modern Material Design standards.

The update focuses on improving application discovery and simplifying user navigation. The interface has been streamlined into three primary sections: Discover, Search, and My Apps. The Discover section highlights new and popular software, while the expanded category system includes 17 distinct genres for games.

Technical improvements include an upgraded search engine capable of scanning app names, descriptions, and translations, with enhanced support for Chinese, Japanese, and Korean writing systems. Additionally, the update introduces automated background updates and a unified installer that utilizes Android’s pre-approval API to simplify the installation process for multiple applications.
