F-Droid Android application release 2.0

Overview

F-Droid, the open-source repository for Android applications, has released version 2.0, its most significant update in a decade. The release involves a complete technical overhaul, rewriting key components in Kotlin using Jetpack Compose to align with modern Material Design standards.

Functional improvements include a redesigned user interface with streamlined navigation through Discover, Search, and My Apps sections. The Discover section specifically highlights new and popular software, while the expanded category system now includes 17 distinct genres for games. Enhanced search capabilities now support CJK (Chinese, Japanese, Korean) characters and allow for advanced filtering based on categories, device compatibility, and anti-features. The upgraded search engine is capable of scanning app names, descriptions, and translations.

The update also introduces a unified installer using Android’s pre-approval API to facilitate simultaneous multi-app downloads and simplifies the installation process. While automatic background updates are now a standard feature, users can configure settings to limit mobile data usage or opt for manual updates.
