Gods Don’t Give Gifts AI film targets Oscar nomination
The AI-focused studio Fable has announced that the film ‘Gods Don’t Give Gifts’ will receive a limited theatrical release in the United States and the United Kingdom on December 4. Directed by YouTuber Zack London, known as Gossip Goblin, the film is an anthology of four interconnected short films that explore themes of transhumanism and the consequences of humanity attempting to transcend death through technology.
The release date was shifted from late October to December to align with the traditional Academy Award campaign season. Fable intends to submit the film for consideration in the Best Animated Feature category at the Oscars. This move serves as a test of the Academy’s policies regarding AI-powered productions; while the Academy has banned AI-written scripts and AI actors from eligibility, it currently allows AI tools to be used as long as human creative authorship remains at the heart of the work.
‘Gods Don’t Give Gifts’ is noted as the first AI-generated feature to receive an R rating from the Motion Picture Association. To support its Oscar bid, Fable plans to conduct advanced screenings for Academy voters and critics, alongside a billboard advertising campaign in Los Angeles.
