Oscar campaign for AI-generated film ‘Gods Don’t Give Gifts’

The AI-focused studio Fable has announced that the film ‘Gods Don’t Give Gifts’, directed by Zack London, will receive a limited theatrical release in the United States and the United Kingdom on December 4, 2026. The film is an anthology of four interconnected short films exploring themes of transhumanism and the consequences of humanity attempting to transcend death through technology.

Following a presentation at the Venice Film Festival in September 2026, the production is aiming for an Academy Award nomination in the Best Animated Feature category. The release date was shifted from late October to December to align with the traditional Academy Award campaign season. This move serves as a test of Academy policies, which currently allow AI tools provided that human creative authorship remains central.

Described as a dark, psychedelic science fiction and horror piece, the film is noted as the first AI-generated feature to receive an R rating from the Motion Picture Association. Fable CEO Edward Saatchi suggested the project could be the ‘Toy Story of this generation’, aiming to provide commentary on contemporary fears regarding artificial intelligence.
