India's NEET paper‑leak protests spark fast‑track courts and calls for Education Minister's resignation
Students across New Delhi have organised a mass movement, the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan after a series of NEET‑UG examination paper leaks. Protesters have camped at Jantar Mantar for weeks, staging sit‑ins and marches that have sometimes turned violent; police baton‑charges and tear‑gas attacks have left more than 100 people injured, including protesters and security personnel. Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the creation of fast‑track courts to try those responsible for the leaks, promising swift, severe punishment. Opposition leaders, notably Rahul Gandhi and Akhilesh Yadav, have criticised the government, accusing Modi of harming youth futures and demanding Pradhan’s dismissal. The government has repeatedly offered formal talks, with Union Ministers JP Nadda and Jitendra Singh sending invitations, which the CJP says must be held at a neutral venue. Celebrities and public figures, including filmmaker Mari Selvaraj and actor‑politician C. Joseph Vijay, have voiced support for the students. The protests continue to dominate Indian political discourse.
