Factors affecting sleep quality and nocturnal symptoms

Various physiological factors can influence sleep quality and nocturnal symptoms. Excessive salivation during sleep is often linked to sleeping positions, such as lying on the side or stomach, or mouth breathing caused by nasal congestion, allergies, or structural issues like a deviated septum. More serious symptoms, including loud snoring, breathing interruptions, and daytime fatigue, may indicate obstructive sleep apnea. Additionally, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) can trigger increased saliva production.

Body temperature regulation is another critical factor for sleep onset. While the body needs to cool down to signal sleep to the brain, taking a warm bath or shower one to one and a half hours before bed can actually assist this process. The warmth causes blood vessels to dilate, allowing the body to release heat more efficiently once out of the water, leading to a drop in core temperature. Similarly, wearing warm socks can help by warming the feet, which aids in heat dissipation through the extremities.
