Factors affecting sleep quality through exercise and diet
Sleep quality can be significantly impacted by exercise timing and dietary choices. According to sleep expert Dr. Shelby Harris, high-intensity workouts late in the evening can act as a stimulant rather than a fatigue aid. Intense activities like HIIT, running, or vigorous cycling can keep the heart rate elevated and prevent the body from cooling down to the temperature required for deep, regenerative sleep phases. It is recommended to allow two to three hours for the body to stabilize after such exertion.
Dietary supplements and hidden stimulants also play a role. Many sports drinks and powders contain caffeine or natural stimulants like green tea extract that can remain in the bloodstream for several hours.
Nutrition can also support better rest. Sleep expert Max Kirsten suggests that certain fruits can aid sleep. Bananas contain magnesium, potassium, and tryptophan, which help relax muscles and promote serotonin production. Cherries and tart cherry juice are noted for their melatonin content, while pineapple provides melatonin and bromelain to assist muscle relaxation. Kiwi is also beneficial due to its vitamin C content, which supports serotonin formation.
