Fagersta attack investigation highlights social media extremism and separate murder plots

Following a violent school attack in Fagersta, Sweden, investigations have highlighted the role of social media in spreading extremist content. An 18-year-old suspect in the Fagersta murder and attempted murder case is alleged to have shared videos glorifying previous attackers. A review by P3 Nyheter of over 10,000 posts on TikTok and Instagram found that nearly one-third of political content on TikTok contained elements of hate, incitement, or violence. The investigation revealed that algorithms pushed Nazi and violence-romanticizing content to users even when they did not actively search for it.

In a related development, a boy detained for aiding the Fagersta attack is also under investigation for separate murder plots targeting a school in the Stockholm area. Prosecutors state the suspect allegedly encouraged the primary perpetrator, Liam Nebel, to carry out the Fagersta attack. Due to reported threats against his family, the suspect's identity has been legally protected by the court.
