Fagersta school attack and investigation of teenage network

Overview

On August 21, 2026, 18-year-old Liam Nebel killed a 17-year-old girl and injured three others during a sword attack at Brinellskolan in Fagersta, Sweden. Nebel faces murder and attempted murder charges. Investigations have focused on his use of social media to glorify mass murderers and terrorists.

A review by P3 Nyheter of over 10,000 posts on TikTok and Instagram found that nearly one-third of political content on TikTok contained elements of hate, incitement, or violence, with algorithms pushing Nazi and violence-romanticizing content to users.

The investigation has since uncovered a broader network of teenagers linked to Nebel through digital communications. A 16-year-old boy in Stockholm, previously suspected of aiding Nebel, is also being investigated for planning a separate school attack in the Stockholm area; his identity has been legally protected due to threats against his family.

Additional arrests and investigations involving minors have emerged: a 15-year-old girl in Södermanland is under investigation for preparation to commit murder, a 14-year-old boy is suspected of conspiracy to commit murder, and minors in Gothenburg are being investigated for unlawful threats. Prosecutor Adolf Moberg Oleszkiewicz noted the investigation is extensive, involving a vast amount of digital evidence and the analysis of seized items from the homes of those involved.

Following the attack, Swedish police have reported a significant surge in alerts regarding threats against schools. Susanna Bellander, the national coordinator for counter-terrorism and extremism, described the rise in reports as “tangible.” These alerts come from relatives expressing concern or individuals reacting to online content. Experts suggest that intensive media coverage may inadvertently trigger others, as perpetrators often seek to achieve an effect through intimidation.
