Faisal Maina arrested in Abuja and handed to EFCC
The Department of State Services (DSS) has arrested Faisal Abdulrasheed Maina in the Karsana area of Abuja and handed him over to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Faisal, the son of former Pension Reform Task Team chairman Abdulrasheed Maina, had been a fugitive since 2020 after allegedly violating bail conditions during a money laundering trial.
Faisal was previously convicted in absentia in October 2021 and sentenced to 14 years in prison. The court found that he operated a fictitious bank account under the name ‘Alhaji Faisal Farm 2’ through which approximately ₦58.1 million linked to his father was laundered between 2013 and 2019. While the initial sentence was 14 years, the Court of Appeal reduced it to seven years in November 2022, citing his status as a first-time offender.
Security sources indicated that the arrest was made possible by intelligence suggesting Faisal had secretly returned to Nigeria. The handover to the EFCC is intended to ensure the enforcement of the existing court judgment.
