EFCC investigations into Maina family pension fraud

Overview

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has intensified its pursuit of individuals linked to pension fund fraud. In September 2026, the EFCC issued a wanted notice for Abdulrasheed Abdullahi Maina, the former chairman of the defunct Pension Reform Task Team (PRTT), regarding allegations of receiving stolen property. This followed his previous imprisonment for a money laundering conviction involving approximately N2 billion in pension funds.

In October 2026, the Department of State Services (DSS) arrested Faisal Abdulrasheed Maina, the son of Abdulrasheed Maina, in the Karsana area of Abuja. Faisal had been a fugitive since 2020 after violating bail conditions related to money laundering charges. Following his arrest, he was handed over to the EFCC to ensure the enforcement of an existing court judgment.

Faisal was previously convicted in absentia in October 2021 and sentenced to 14 years in prison for operating a fictitious bank account under the name ‘Alhaji Faisal Farm 2’. Through this account, approximately ₦58.1 million linked to his father was laundered between 2013 and 2019. While the initial sentence was 14 years, the Court of Appeal reduced it to seven years in November 2022, citing his status as a first-time offender.
