Fall gardening tips for planting and maintaining shrubs

October provides an ideal window for planting trees and shrubs, as cooler air temperatures reduce heat stress while warm soil supports root development. Selecting plants that offer multi-seasonal interest, such as oakleaf hydrangeas for fall foliage or American holly for winter structure, can enhance landscape value.

Proper maintenance is critical during this period. Newly planted specimens require consistent watering until freezing temperatures arrive, as insufficient moisture is a primary cause of plant failure. This is especially important for evergreens, which continue to lose moisture through foliage during winter.

Specific shrubs suitable for fall planting include reblooming azaleas, which flower in late summer and fall, and Sasanqua camellias, which can bloom from September for several months. Panicle hydrangeas are also noted as options that do not require flower removal at the end of summer.
