Family in the woods: children's school placement remains undecided

The educational future of the three children involved in the ‘family in the woods’ case remains undecided as the 2026/2027 school year approaches. The children, who have been residing in a foster home in Vasto since November, have successfully passed placement exams for the second and fourth grades of primary school.

Several options are being considered for their schooling: attending an institute in Palmoli, near their former residence, or attending a school in Vasto, where they currently live. These locations are approximately 30 kilometers apart and operate on different academic calendars. A third possibility being explored by the family is homeschooling, a method previously supported by a retired teacher during their stay in the foster community.

Final decisions regarding school enrollment and the children's living situation depend on a pending ruling from the Juvenile Court of L'Aquila. The court has yet to issue a decision regarding the potential reunification of the children with their parents, Nathan Trevallion and Catherine Birmingham, a ruling that was expected in July. Until a judicial decision is made, the responsibility for school enrollment rests with the court-appointed guardian, lawyer Maria Luisa Palladino.
