The ‘family in the woods’ case involving Nathan Trevallion and Catherine Birmingham has entered a new phase of legal dispute following a ruling by the Juvenile Court of L'Aquila. The court has ordered a gradual reunification process for the three children, who have been in a Vasto foster home since November. This plan, scheduled to begin in October, includes daytime visits in Palmoli and potential weekend stays under social services supervision.

In response, the parents have announced an appeal against the ruling. They have expressed deep distress, stating the situation ‘breaks our hearts’. The appeal contests several aspects of the court’s decision, specifically the mandatory enrollment of the children in public school rather than allowing them to continue their established homeschooling program. The parents also raised concerns regarding the children’s health, claiming medical professionals advised that an immediate return home is necessary to mitigate health risks.

Legal representative Simone Pillon has criticized social services for ‘inertia and unacceptable delay’ in implementing court directives. Furthermore, defense attorneys and psychiatric consultants continue to warn of a high risk of bullying due to intense media attention and existing prejudices among potential classmates in the public school system.
