FamilyMart introduces T-shirt uniforms and relaxed grooming rules

FamilyMart has announced a major overhaul of its store staff uniforms and workplace policies to combat labor shortages and high turnover rates. Starting September 1, the company will introduce a T-shirt style uniform—the first of its kind in the convenience store industry—designed by Kohri Ochiai. The new apparel is based on the successful ‘Convenience Wear’ line and allows for more casual, layered styling.

To foster a more inclusive and attractive work environment, FamilyMart is introducing new grooming standards called ‘Famima Code.’ These guidelines allow for greater personal expression, including freedom in hair color, the ability to wear religious headwear such as hijabs, and the option to use ‘working names’ instead of legal names. The company is also implementing ‘announcement badges’ to help staff communicate disabilities, such as hearing or visual impairments, to customers.

Addressing the issue of staff retention, the company has restructured its qualification system into ‘Basic’ and ‘Advance’ tiers to reduce psychological stress for new hires and increase motivation for experienced staff. Additionally, FamilyMart aims to increase job applications by 50% through new incentive campaigns and expanded digital training content. The company also reported strong growth for its ‘Convenience Wear’ brand, which has surpassed 20 billion yen in sales, and plans to expand into pet supplies and more collaborative product lines.
