Fannie Masemola resumes role as South Africa National Police Commissioner

National Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Fannie Masemola has returned to his post following the lifting of his precautionary suspension by President Cyril Ramaphosa. The suspension, which began in April, was ended after the National Prosecuting Authority withdrew criminal charges against him related to alleged contraventions of the Public Finance Management Act involving a SAPS healthcare services tender.

Upon his return to the Tshwane Academy, Masemola met with provincial, deputy national, and divisional commissioners. He stated that his return provides an opportunity to reinforce the rule of law, institutional stability, and accountability within the South African Police Service (SAPS). He emphasized a commitment to uniting the organization and strengthening its integrity to better serve and protect the public.

Masemola’s reinstatement occurs as the police service faces scrutiny regarding corruption and declining performance. The Madlanga Commission is currently examining allegations of criminal infiltration within the criminal justice system, while parliamentary leaders have called for increased accountability to rebuild public trust.
