Reinstatement of South African National Police Commissioner

Overview

President Cyril Ramaphosa announced the reinstatement of National Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Fannie Masemola, effective 19 October 2026. Masemola returns to his position following a six-month precautionary suspension that began in April 2026.

The suspension was tied to criminal charges regarding a South African Police Service (SAPS) healthcare tender involving Medicare24 Tshwane District. Allegations suggested the R360-million contract contravened the Public Finance Management Act, leading to an internal audit and the eventual cancellation of the contract in May 2025.

Following a call from the National Director of Public Prosecutions to withdraw the charges due to insufficient evidence, a Pretoria court formalized the withdrawal. Upon resuming his duties, Masemola stated his return offers an opportunity to “reinforce the rule of law, institutional stability, and accountability” within the SAPS. His reinstatement occurs amid broader scrutiny of the police service, including investigations by the Madlanga Commission into criminal infiltration within the justice system.
