Dominican Republic exits ‘Hunger Map’ as food security initiatives expand

On the occasion of World Food Day, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) highlighted the global need for innovation to transform food systems, emphasizing the theme ‘Innovate today to nourish tomorrow’. While global hunger affects 645 million people, the FAO noted that the world possesses the necessary technology and knowledge to ensure food security if solutions are adopted at scale.

In the Dominican Republic, the government reported significant progress in food security. The FAO announced that the country has exited the ‘Hunger Map’ after reducing the prevalence of undernourishment to below 2.5%. President Luis Abinader received recognition from the FAO for these efforts. To support vulnerable populations, the Direction of Social Assistance and Community Feeding (DASAC) has expanded its network of community kitchens and mobile kitchens from 36 to 163 establishments, now serving 4 million cooked meals monthly.

However, challenges remain. Dominican rice producers have called for increased financing and protection against international competition, noting that fertilizers account for 35% to 40% of production costs. Additionally, some citizens expressed concerns that official hunger statistics may not fully reflect the rising cost of food for low-income families. Meanwhile, in Mexico, authorities worked to reinforce food sovereignty by returning native maize seeds to producers in Guerrero to preserve ancestral varieties.
