Fapesp to revoke controversial international research grant rules

The Foundation for Research Support of the State of São Paulo (Fapesp) is expected to revoke a controversial new edict regarding research grants for studies abroad. The decision follows backlash from the scientific community and researcher entities after new rules were leaked before being formally reviewed by the foundation’s superior council.

São Paulo Governor Tarcísio de Freitas expressed disapproval of the move, stating that the administration intervened to ensure no cuts would occur, noting that the foundation maintains sufficient funds. The scientific director, Marcio de Castro Silva Filho, was identified as the person responsible for the proposed changes.

Fapesp holds a central role in Brazilian science, accounting for 57.6% of the total investment made by state research foundations in 2024. The institution manages thousands of active scholarships across various levels, including undergraduate, master's, doctoral, and postdoctoral programs.
