FARDC reports surrender of 17 M23 coalition fighters in Fizi

The Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (FARDC) announced the surrender of 17 fighters from the AFC-M23/Twirwaneho coalition in the Fizi territory of South Kivu. The surrenders took place in the areas of Abala, Nyaruhinga, and Kabanja. Additionally, one combatant was captured during localized clashes in the region.

Military officials reported that several of the surrendering fighters were minors between the ages of 14 and 16. These individuals cited extreme living conditions and deceptive promises as reasons for their departure from the rebel group. One young civilian, who had been kidnapped in Goma and forcibly recruited by the M23, testified to the hardships endured while in the rebellion.

This event follows recent surrenders in North Kivu, where dozens of AFC-M23 fighters reportedly laid down their arms in the Masisi, Walikale, and Lubero territories following repelled attacks against FARDC positions.
