Farmers protest nitrogen policies in Leeuwarden

Farmers in the Netherlands are intensifying protests against government nitrogen reduction plans. On Wednesday morning, tractors from several Frisian towns, including Heerenveen and Bolsward, converged on the provincial house in Leeuwarden to demonstrate against the policies proposed by Agriculture Minister Jaimi van Essen.

The protests are led by activist groups such as Agractie, Farmers Defence Force, the Dutch Melkveehouders Vakbond (NMV), and the Dutch Dairy Board (DDB). These organizations demand the cancellation of nitrogen plans that would require farmers to reduce livestock numbers and implement stricter emission controls near nature reserves to meet 2035 targets.

There is a notable divide in strategy within the agricultural sector. While activist groups refuse to negotiate with the government, other organizations like LTO Nederland and the Nederlands Agrarisch Jongeren Kontakt (NAJK) are choosing a path of dialogue. LTO is currently negotiating with the minister to seek adjustments to the plans, emphasizing the importance of maintaining communication alongside external pressure.
