Faroe Islands seek greater autonomy from Denmark

The Faroe Islands are seeking to redefine their relationship with the Kingdom of Denmark to increase their autonomy. While the archipelago of approximately 55,000 people already maintains its own parliament, government, and control over many internal affairs, key responsibilities such as foreign policy, defense, and security remain under the jurisdiction of Copenhagen.

Following the March 2026 elections, the new Prime Minister, Benir Johannesen, has advocated for greater independence. Johannesen, a liberal-conservative politician, aims to move the boundaries of the current structure without seeking an immediate dissolution of the Kingdom of Denmark. He argues that the current arrangement does not represent a union of three equal partners, as Denmark maintains institutional superiority and final authority on major international issues. The new leadership seeks the ability to represent Faroese interests globally without constant oversight from Danish ministers.
