Fashion Industry Pushes Sustainable Materials Amid Environmental Concerns
The global apparel sector accounts for roughly 10% of worldwide CO₂ emissions and generates about 92 million tonnes of textile waste each year, with only 15% recycled. Producing a single pair of jeans can require up to 7,500 liters of water, illustrating the sector’s heavy resource use.
In response, brands such as Stella McCartney, Patagonia and others are increasing the use of recycled and bio‑based fibers—organic cotton, linen, hemp, recycled polyester and ECONYL nylon—while adopting blockchain tools to verify supply‑chain ethics. Consumer demand is driving the shift: surveys show two‑thirds of shoppers are willing to pay more for eco‑friendly garments, prompting larger companies to incorporate circular‑economy practices and improve labor standards.
