Fasting at least 3 hours before sleep may improve heart health

A randomized-controlled study involving 39 overweight or obese middle-aged and older adults suggests that extended overnight fasting, specifically starting at least 3 hours before sleep, can improve cardiometabolic health. The research indicates that this approach positively affects blood pressure control and metabolic activity.

Key findings include improved nighttime autonomic function, better morning glucose tolerance, and a more effective nighttime reduction in diastolic blood pressure and heart rate. This method of time-restricted eating is designed to align with individual sleep patterns, potentially making it easier to integrate into daily life compared to rigid fasting windows.

While studies suggest intermittent fasting can positively influence blood pressure, experts note it should not replace medical advice or prescribed medications. Individuals with hypertension should consult a physician before starting such regimens, as fasting may not be suitable for everyone.
