Kenya highway crash kills at least 24 people

A fatal collision between a passenger bus and a cement truck occurred on the Nairobi-Mombasa highway in southeastern Kenya on Sunday, October 25. The accident took place in the Kanga area near Mtito Andei, resulting in at least 24 deaths and approximately 24 injuries.

The bus, belonging to Power of the Word Church International, was transporting mourners returning to Mombasa following a pastor’s funeral in western Kenya. While some survivors reported the bus was struck from behind, authorities and the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) are investigating improper overtaking as a primary cause of the head-on collision.

This tragedy follows another major accident on the same stretch of road on October 3, which killed 17 people. In response to the recurring fatalities, the NTSA has called on the government to declare road crashes a national disaster to secure funding and coordinated enforcement. President William Ruto has ordered inspections of all public service vehicles to ensure safety compliance.
