Fatal road accidents in Kenya

Overview

Fatal traffic accidents have been reported on major Kenyan highways. In Nakuru, a vehicle reportedly lost control at the Railway Bridge, striking pedestrians and resulting in two deaths. On the Nairobi-Mombasa highway, a head-on collision occurred in the Kanga area near Mtito Andei. The accident, which took place around 7:00 am on a Sunday, involved a passenger bus carrying people returning from a funeral and a commercial truck.

Preliminary investigations by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) suggest that improper overtaking may have caused the bus to lose control, though some survivors reported the truck struck the bus from behind, causing it to roll. The bus, belonging to Power of the Word Church International, was transporting approximately 45 passengers returning from a pastor’s funeral in western Kenya, while the truck was reportedly transporting cement. Recent reports confirm at least 24 fatalities and approximately 24 injuries.

The NTSA has previously identified this stretch of highway as an “accident black spot,” and this tragedy follows another fatal accident on the same route on October 3 that claimed 17 lives. In response to the recurring incidents, Roads and Transport Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir has called for urgent safety reforms and infrastructure improvements. Additionally, President William Ruto has ordered inspections of all public service vehicles to ensure compliance with safety regulations. The NTSA has called on the government to declare road crashes a “national disaster” to secure urgent funding and coordinated enforcement.
