Veracruz transport workers plan strikes amid rising insecurity
Transport workers in Veracruz are preparing for a state-wide strike and highway blockades following a surge in violence and insecurity. The Alianza Mexicana de Organización de Transportistas (AMOTAC) announced the imminent mobilization after failed negotiations with state authorities regarding extortion, lack of security, and abuses of power.
AMOTAC representatives reported severe criminal activity over the last 15 days, including 11 robberies on the Veracruz-Perote highway, seven missing drivers, and at least six kidnappings. The organization noted that these crimes have resulted in millions of pesos in economic losses due to the theft of vehicles and cargo.
Delegates expressed frustration with the government's response, alleging that authorities have failed to provide concrete solutions or address reports of extortion by officials and towing services. The planned strike aims to pressure the government into implementing effective security measures to protect cargo operators throughout the state.
